Pooling skills and experience to catalyse wetland restoration across the Mediterranean

About us

The Mediterranean has lost more than 50% of its natural wetlands since 1970, and we continue to destroy them through poorly planned development and agricultural water abstraction. As climate change and population growth continue, saving and restoring what remains of these unique habitats is an urgent priority – but this does not have to come at the cost of socio-economic development. In fact, using our wetlands as nature-based solutions to some of our most pressing issues will benefit society just as much as the environment.

Nevertheless, ensuring the survival of our coastal wetlands on a regional scale is a huge task and one that requires collaboration across the Mediterranean.

This is why the Wetland-based Solutions project was created. It gathers together a powerful network of expert organisations working to preserve and restore Mediterranean wetlands, who pool their expertise and experiences to hone skills, identify successful solutions, raise awareness, and spread best practices across the basin.

The project does this through:

Our goals require consistent and persistent actions.

Studies, research and knowledge

The development of a constantly-growing open source database of studies, research and knowledge to share understanding and underpin collective progress in wetland science

Policy actions

Policy actions at local, national and international levels to build the momentum needed to ensure political commitments towards effective wetland restoration.

Supporting sustainable development

Direct actions to support sustainable socio-economic development in key wetland areas.

Promoting nature-based solutions

Engagement with authorities and civil society to promote wetlands as nature-based solutions against increasing climate impacts and the worsening water crisis in the Mediterranean

Replicable models

The creation and dissemination at scale of replicable management and governance models.

Key aims by 2022

Achieving our global goal, it is need to reach following specific objectives:

Creating opportunities and solutions

Ensure wetland economic sectors operate sustainably and create livelihood opportunities as well as nature-based solutions to the climate and water crises.

Working at European and Mediterranean scales

Put the protection and restoration of coastal wetlands at the top of EU and Mediterranean regional agendas.

Working with wetland managers

Consolidate the network of Mediterranean wetlands managers, which already operates in 120 sites across 1 million hectares.
