Working Group

Working Group on the restoration of wetlands for Carbon sequestration and GHG mitigation

What challenges does this group intend to tackle?

  • Understand wetlands’ capacity to act as sink or source of GHG (particularly, CO2, CH4 and N2O) depending on their condition and land uses in the catchment
  • Assess wetlands’ current and potential carbon and GHG profile to prove their role in climate mitigation

Why this is important ?

Land use, C-sequestration potential and global warming potential (GWP) mitigating/ generating capacity of wetlands on different climate (RCPs) scenarios have been assessed even at catchment level, but not generally linked to the possible effects of wetland restoration actions.

There is a need to overcome data gaps and to interlink and upscale the assessment of pressure levels on wetlands, then relating the conservation status and the result of restoration actions addressing these pressures and impacts with their capacity to store carbon (C) and mitigate GHG emissions.
